Parkinson’s, Vitamins and Government

For years I believed the American healthcare system was the best in the world. I don’t anymore. The efficiency of our healthcare system ranks 46th out of the top 48 countries, yet we spend 18% of our gross national product, more than any other nation on the planet, trying to make ourselves well. Our life expectancy has dropped from 13th out of the top industrialized nations to 26th. Do you really think government agencies have our best interests at heart?

Governments do not generate income, we the people do. But government has an insatiable appetite for our money. What really bothers me though is that the US Preventive Services task force has concluded that there is “no persuasive evidence to suggest that routine vitamin supplementation offers any meaningful health benefits”. Are you kidding? There are thousands of studies that prove otherwise. If you aren’t already taking a daily vitamin/mineral supplement, you can bet your government researcher is taking one.

Drug manufacturers have become a separate branch of government. Their incredible wealth allows them to “lobby”, ie: bribe elected officials to pass laws supporting and enhancing their profitability. Our less than perfect system of medicine demands we take personal responsibility for our own health. With so much information on the Internet, there’s no excuse not to.

Parkinson’s disease has increased significantly in the 30 year period from 1976 to 2005. Prescription drug use is now almost universal. This wasn’t the case a few decades ago. The side effects of pharmaceutical drugs have now been linked to mental decline, dementia, and neurological damage. Statins are just one example. The use and exposure to pesticides has skyrocketed which many believe is a huge contributing factor in neurological disease.

The majority of pesticides directly affect the nervous system. Spray a cockroach and watch the tremors, inability to move, erratic movements, and loss of balance. It’s a greatly accelerated film clip mimicking the progression of Parkinson’s disease. Unfortunately, symptoms only occur after 70% of our brains dopamine producing cells have already been destroyed. But now, London researchers have discovered a new method of observing changes in the retina which can predict Parkinson’s before serious brain damage occurs.

Current treatment for Parkinson’s is focused on replacing the neurotransmitter dopamine in the brain through the use of synthetic drugs. This is somewhat effective in the short term, but it doesn’t necessarily protect or repair the damaged neurons that produce dopamine.

Researchers at Thomas Jefferson University in Philadelphia have just reported that the amino acid N-acetyl cysteine (NAC) not only slows the advancement of Parkinson’s but also protects the neurons that produce dopamine. In a double-blind study, the patients receiving 50 mg/kg of NAC intravenously once a week and 600 mg orally twice a day, saw their Parkinson’s stop progressing. They had improvements of 4-9% in dopamine transport binding, and their brain scans improved roughly 13%. The researchers commented that never before had they seen this kind of effect in the treatment of Parkinson’s disease. If you have Parkinson’s, or know of anyone who suffers from this disease, please tell them about this study and have them discuss it with their physician.

The body converts NAC into glutathione which is one of the most powerful antioxidants and detoxifiers known. It is the premier biological marker of aging and is directly related to your overall current health and an indicator of your potential longevity. I personally take 600 mg of NAC twice a day along with a serious amount of herbals and multivitamins. Anyone taking acetaminophen (Tylenol) on a regular basis, is deficient in glutathione in the liver, lungs, and kidneys. If this is you, it would make sense to take NAC.

I’ll get off my soapbox now. Share some of the above information with your family and friends. It saddens me to see my patients gradually becoming less and less healthy. It doesn’t have to be that way.  Take charge of your own health. It’s worth the effort. Stay well... Dr Bill Ardito, DDS – Sunshine Dentistry AZ
